Katie Duke: Deal With It

Nurseonality Katie Duke is famous for her outspoken, sassy, “real” personality.  Of course, Cherokee4Lee had a question upon meeting her in NYC…Where did the “Nurse Deal With It” nickname?  Is this her own personal smart little saying, is this what she thinks in her head when there’s nurse drama or patients who are exaggerating their ‘probably’ pain level of 3 to a 12?  Over dinner and drinks at Carmine’s Italian restaurant, it made perfect sense.

Katie explained how when she was a child and even growing up into a young adult, her mother always gave tough love.  She was always nurturing and a wonderful mother and role model, but held Katie accountable for all her actions.  If she made a mistake…fess up and deal with it.  If she fell down and scraped her knee, get up and deal with it.  She prepared Katie to stand and deal, don’t take any crap, figure out a way to get through the situation at hand, don’t make excuses, and don’t blame anybody else for your misfortunes.

So in turn, Katie grew up with thick skin, a lady who accepted the cards she was dealt, and a worldly outlook.  Plus, this woman has a huge heart and a passion to help others.  She’s an amazing nurse who is now also a nurse practitioner.  She handles trauma in the ER like a champ, sets her feelings to the side, and gets the job done.  Cherokee4Less really began to understand the daily struggles of nurse life, difficult patients and how to provide the best care, suck it up, and move along to the next patient with a smile, and why nurses are so understaffed right now.  More blogs to come!  Stay tuned!
